A desert cooler earns its name in the weeks when the air is bone dry and the mercury will not come down. Novamax builds seven of them, with water tanks from 75 to 100 litres, so a unit filled in the morning is still throwing cold air late into the evening without a refill.
Every model in this range runs three-side high-density honeycomb pads rather than the wood wool found on cheaper coolers. Honeycomb holds more water across a larger surface, drops the incoming air temperature further, and does not rot or shed fibres into the room. Behind the pads sits a 1400 RPM motor moving between 3,550 and 5,150 cfm, with an air throw of 50 to 60 feet and four-way deflection so the cold air reaches the far corner instead of stalling in front of the cooler.
They cover 500 to 600 sq ft on roughly 200 watts — about a fifth of what a comparable air conditioner draws — and every unit is inverter compatible, so a power cut does not end the cooling. Bodies are moulded in PPCP and ABS, shockproof and rustproof, on four castor wheels with brakes. Start with the room, not the price. As a working rule, allow roughly one litre of tank capacity for every six to eight square feet you need to cool, then check the air throw against the longest dimension of the room. A 75 litre Mist or Kazer is the right size for a 400–500 sq ft bedroom, living room or small office. A 90 to 100 litre Zephyr, Iceland or Whiff suits an open-plan hall, a showroom floor or a room with high ceilings where the air has more volume to move.
Cooling in an evaporative cooler happens on the pad, not in the fan. High-density honeycomb presents far more wetted surface to the incoming air than wood wool, so more water evaporates per pass and the air leaving the cooler is measurably colder. It also drains cleanly, resists algae and lasts several seasons rather than one. On the three-side models the intake area is close to doubled, which is what allows a 200 watt motor to hold 600 sq ft.
At around 200 watts, a Novamax desert cooler costs a fraction of an air conditioner to run and adds no refrigerant to the room. Evaporative cooling needs somewhere for the humid air to go, so keep a window or door partly open and place the cooler where it draws in fresh outside air. Refill with clean water, run the pump only once the pads are wet, and drain the tank at the end of the season.
